Sunrise Celebrates 45th Anniversary

This year, Sunrise Services is celebrating 45 years of serving individuals in Western Washington! We take pride in all of the work our employees have done over the years to care for our communities.

For our anniversary celebration this year, Sunrise employees joined together at Rosehill Community Center. We shared inspiring client success stories, listened to a motivational speaker, ate good food, and enjoyed a fun team-building exercise.

We look forward to continuing our mission for many years to come!

The History of Sunrise

Since 1978, Sunrise has been working tirelessly to provide important services for individuals in need. We owe our vision and our passion to the leadership and energy of Gene and Sue Closser, the founders of Sunrise Services.

In the mid-1970s, Sue and Gene worked at an institution in Colorado. They believed there was a better way to serve people with disabilities, and they sought to open a new care facility to better provide people with the lives they deserved. They moved to a state that was much more progressive with group homes and caring for those in need – Washington State.

Initially, Gene worked maintenance for three group homes operated by his brother, and Sue worked as a physical therapist at Northwest Hospital. On their wedding anniversary on March 1st, 1977, Sue and Gene took over these three homes and thus began a long, storied career of working to care for people with disabilities, seniors in need of care, and individuals dealing with mental conditions.
