How Technology Fits Into Modern Caregiver Training

Caregiving isn’t a technology job. However, prospective HCA-Cs in Washington state typically do some of their HCA-C training online and use a bit of technology on the job.

Here’s how you can expect to use technology during your caregiver training, both during your initial 75-hour HCA-C training and after you begin working.

Technology During Initial HCA-C Training

Caregiver training today typically includes some online training components. If you enroll in the 75-hour HCA-C training program at Sunrise Services, you will need to complete 5 hours of orientation and safety training online. This is the part of your training that must be completed before you work with a client for the first time.

You will also take most of your core basic training online. Out of the 54 hours of core basic instruction required for HCA-C certification, you will complete 38 of those hours online. After that, you will be able to finish up the core basic portion of your training offline with two days of hands-on skill practice in a lab setting.

Our program gives you the flexibility to learn a lot of core caregiving concepts on your own schedule before coming in for the in-person part of your training. That way, you will be prepared to make the most of your in-person class time and get more hands-on skills practice.

Online training has improved a great deal over the past few years. Our hybrid online/in-person training program has proven quite successful in training caregivers.

Technology During the HCA Certification Exam

Sunrise has been approved to schedule HCA (Home Health Aide) testing directly. To be eligible to schedule directly with Sunrise, students must have completed the HCA 75-hour course classes at Sunrise Caregiver Training or have a hard-copy certificate of program completion from another DSHS-approved training site.

Next, candidates need to apply through SAW-HELMs and pay their application fee ($100). Students must choose the code SUNRISETRN when requesting a testing site. After the application process, an application number is created. Please provide this number to Sunrise so we can schedule your test. You will have a Knowledge and Skill test on the same day.

The testing fee will remain the same: $100.00 for the Skill Test and $50.00 for the Knowledge Test. This fee will be due upon scheduling. If you pass both tests, your certificates will be forwarded to the state, and you will receive your credential within one week. If you fail either test, you may reapply to retake it after one week of additional study.

Technology During Job-Specific Training

Technology

Once you are hired for a caregiving job, your employer should train you on whatever technology you need to use. Here at Sunrise Services, there are a couple of different platforms we may train you on, depending on which program you are working in.

Our Supported Living Program trains Direct Support Professionals to use a program called Therap. We use Therap to document client behaviors, make notes on other important things that occur, and review care plans.

Therap is designed for use by case management, nursing, and other health support team members. We will train you to use the features that are needed for your specific job.

If you are hired to work in Sunrise’s Enhanced Services Facility (ESF), we will train you on a different platform. As of this writing, caregivers in the ESF program use SETWorks.

Like Therap, SETWorks is a secure tool we use to keep track of client information and documentation. We will show you how to use the features you need to use in your job.
