How Caregiver Training at Sunrise Services Can Advance Your Career

Sunrise Services offers caregiver training for people at all stages of their care careers, from getting started as a Home Care Aide (HCA) to moving up into a Nursing Assistant (NAC) role. Our basic training, specialty, and NAC Bridge courses are a great way to expand your job opportunities.

Here’s how our caregiver training programs can help with your career goals:

1. Getting Started as a Home Care Aide (HCA)

Sunrise Services has a flexible 75-hour basic caregiver training program that meets all Washington State DSHS requirements for training. Our program prepares you to succeed in both the state skill test and the written test.

Our caregiver training is partially online and partially in-person. The online component gives you flexibility to complete most of your training on your own time. The in-person component gives you the hands-on practice and instructor feedback you need to succeed in the skills test.

After you complete your training, apply for state testing, and pay the state application fee, you can also directly schedule your HCA credential testing with Sunrise Services. That means you can schedule your HCA credential testing within a week of completing all the testing application requirements. You won’t be stuck waiting for months to do your testing and gain your HCA credentials.

2. Training For More HCA Job Opportunities

Many caregiving jobs require skills that aren’t covered in basic HCA training. For instance, many Adult Family Homes and assisted living facilities need HCAs with specialty training on caring for dementia patients. They may also require caregivers to be certified for nurse delegation.

Our Nurse Delegation program and specialty courses can help you qualify for more Home Care Aide jobs. You will be able to work in a wider range of settings, qualify for potentially higher-paying roles, and serve a wider range of clients.

Nurse Delegation Training

Sunrise Services offers a two-part, self-study Nurse Delegation training series. For each training, you will read through the workbook and fill out all exercises in the book on your own time, then complete testing in person.

The first Nurse Delegation course is Nurse Delegation Core. It is a 9-credit course that can count toward your annual Continuing Education (CE) credit requirement. It teaches you about the nurse delegation process, what can and cannot be delegated, and the legal issues involved. After you pass the Nurse Delegation Core test, you will receive a Nurse Delegation Certification. That means an RN at your employer facility can then train you on new skills and delegate them to you.

The second Nurse Delegation course is Nurse Delegation Diabetes, a 3-credit course that can also be used for CE credits. You must have already passed the Nurse Delegation Core course to enroll in Nurse Delegation Diabetes. The course teaches you how to care for diabetic patients and how insulin injections work. After you pass the Nurse Delegation Diabetes course, an RN at your facility can give you hands-on training for diabetic care.

Specialty Courses

As of this writing, we offer two specialty courses for caregivers: Capable Caregiving for Mental Wellness and Dementia Capable Caregiving/Dementia Specialty. These courses can help you qualify for jobs that involve working with patients who have mental illnesses or dementia.

Capable Caregiving for Mental Wellness is an 8-hour class that teaches you about common mental disorders, supports for mental health care, trauma-informed care, behaviors, getting help, crisis management, and other important topics. We offer the class either in-person or via Zoom as arranged. There is a written exam at the end, and if you pass, you will receive a certificate as well as 8 hours of CE credit. One free retest is allowed.

Dementia Capable Caregiving/Dementia Specialty is another 8-hour class. You will learn about the basics of dementia, delusions and hallucinations, working with families, sexuality and dementia, challenging behaviors, trauma-informed care, ADLs, and more. If you pass the exam at the end, you will receive a certificate and 8 hours of CE credit. One free retest is allowed.

3. Becoming a Nursing Assistant (NAC)

Sunrise has a NAC Bridge training program that can help you transition into the nursing field! This program “bridges” the gap between what an HCA is taught and what a NAC is required to know. It is designed to prepare HCAs for the Washington State NAC licensing test.

Once you are a NAC, you will be able to work in a wider range of settings, including hospitals and clinics. Holding a NAC license and gaining experience with direct patient care will also help you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training program.

The NAC Bridge program is a 40-hour course taught over 5 days. Those 40 hours include 17 hours of new content, 13 hours of skill lab practice, and 8 hours of clinical practicum. After you complete the course, you will receive a certificate of completion and be ready to take the state NAC licensing test.
