Attention AFHs: Free Training Available For HCAs, CNAs, Nurse Delegation and More!

If your adult family home is tight on funds, spending several thousand dollars to get a caregiver certified may seem unaffordable. Thankfully, there’s a little-known resource that can help cover the cost of training.

The Long-Term Care Foundation of Washington State offers scholarships for AFH employees to earn HCA, CNA/NAC, Nurse Delegation, or CPR training. You, as the ADF owner, may also be eligible for a stipend if the individual you sponsored through the Adult Family Home Training Network completed an eligible training (HCA or CNA). Please contact the Long-Term Care Foundation to find out more about the stipend benefits.

The program is designed to help AFHs throughout Washington recruit, train, and retain qualified long-term care workers. It was negotiated between the Adult Family Home Council and the State of Washington.

Scholarships For AFH Employees

The Long-Term Care Foundation program includes both training funds and a possible stipend to cover the ADF owner’s costs of hiring a temporary worker to replace staff during training. Please contact the LTCF to see if your employees are eligible.  If you’re looking to hire caregivers and sponsor applicants, the Adult Family Home Training Network will help you with outreach and recruitment.

To be eligible for these scholarships, your adult family home must:

  • Be contracted with Medicaid. Depending on the availability of funds, the amount of sponsorship benefit may be based on your Medicaid occupancy.
  • Use the funds to train new or current employees. The employees must have worked in your AFH for at least 40 hours. Depending on the availability of funds, you may have more than one employee from your AFH sponsored by the foundation.

How You Can Use These Scholarships

Free Training

The Sunrise Services Caregiver Training program can help you or your supervisor understand how to access these training dollars. Sunrise Caregiver Training is an approved training center, and it works directly with the LTCF in the registration, training, and billing processes. Sunrise also supports students in their state credential process for HCA and CNA/NAC during course completion, making a complicated process much easier.

Sunrise HCA Certification Training

The Sunrise 75 Hours Basic Home Care Aide Training program meets the full educational requirements for HCA-C certification in Washington. Our partially online (5 days) and partially in-person (2 days) program will provide your employee with the hands-on practice they need to prepare for the state exam. The DSHS approves all of our courses and instructors.

Sunrise NAC Bridge Training

Our Nursing Assistant-Certified (NAC) Bridge program enables HCA-Cs to become certified as Nursing Assistants (NAC). It “bridges” the knowledge gap between what an HCA is taught and what an NAC must know. The 38-hour course includes 16 hours of classroom training, 13 hours of skills lab practice, and 8 hours of clinical practice to prepare your HCA-C employee to take the state NAC licensing test. Sunrise Caregiver Training is involved in the state pilot program, which enables Sunrise to assist students in their application process and allows them to automatically test one week after completing their training.

Sunrise Nurse Delegation Training

Sunrise Services offers a 9-hour nurse delegation core training and a 3-hour nurse delegation diabetes training. These self-study courses cover everything needed to prepare for the onsite DSHS test. Your employee will need to pass the Nurse Delegation Core Test before they can take the Nurse Delegation Diabetes course.

Sunrise CPR Training

Our hybrid CPR, first aid, and AED course is approved for all DSHS-approved caregivers, DSPs for Supportive Living Programs, and standard businesses and companies. It includes training in CPR for adults, children, and infants, as well as first aid and the use of an automated external defibrillator. The program includes online training, hands-on skills practice, and in-person testing. Your employee will receive a 2-year certification card upon successful completion of the course.

Sunrise HCA Specialty Training

We also offer specialty courses for caregivers. Your employee can specialize in mental health and dementia with 8 hours (one day) of in-person training, plus a written exam. Starting January 1, 2026, Sunrise will offer the brand new Dementia 2 course.
